Download our new ebook: When Communities Own Spaces for Business
The federal poverty line strictly looks at monetary income to determine who is impoverished. Next City's coverage of economic hardship, however, focuses on concrete ways to achieve greater economic justice in cities. The most powerful solutions are those that come from and engage with the affected communities, increase economic mobility, or counter the effects of living in poverty. Storylines include guaranteed income programs for city residents as well as for targeted populations; urban gardening and community fridge programs that improve healthy food access; portability of benefits, paid sick leave and gig worker organizing; increasing access to affordable child care; and more.
