Planners who envision an ambitious makeover for the Los Angeles River may be getting some green space conservancy competition from up north. Sacramento Assemblyman Kevin McCarty this week called for the creation of an American River Parkway Conservancy to support a 23-mile urban forest in the Sacramento region.
The designation could pave the wave for more state funding for improvements, such as building better bike infrastructure, to the Parkway, which is made up of a network of recreational parks and natural habitat along the American River. It runs from towns in the eastern Sacramento County to downtown Sacramento.
According to the Sacramento Bee, “the state has given river conservancies money for water quality improvement, habitat restoration and pedestrian and bike access, among other things,” and “since 1996, $660 million of the $740 million in state funds allocated to rivers has gone to those with state conservancies, according to McCarty’s proposal.”
Others are advocating for forming a nonprofit agency to manage the Parkway, similar to the Central Park Conservancy in New York City.
