Over the past year, Next American City—a 501©(3) nonprofit organization—has experienced unprecedented growth as well as promoted and directly influenced urban policy from coast to coast.

Through our quarterly magazine, which has seen its readership double in the past year, we brought you groundbreaking articles on topics as varied as urban bike- and car-sharing programs, the growing problem of suburban poverty, and strategies for vacant land reuse. We dedicated an entire issue to the hopes and challenges of the great American cities of Detroit and New Orleans. We also held events with an array of partners in Austin, San Francisco, and elsewhere, including our Next American Vanguard conference in Philadelphia and our recent Open Cities conference in Washington, D.C. We even convened a special webcast with the White House Office of Urban Affairs and leading federal agencies. And we shared these important dialogues with you and the world through our americancity.org website, which has seen its traffic more than triple to over 75,000 readers each month.

This coming year, we intend to draw clear lines between our magazine and other programs. Our 30th issue, to be published this spring, will reflect on our successful Open Cities conference series and delve deeper into the intersection of new media and urban policy, while our summer issue will explore new models for civic participation, community service, and social innovation. We will handpick and convene another outstanding class of our Next American Vanguard—emerging leaders, working on the front lines of urban change. And we hope to unite urban innovators in real time, through events such as our third annual Open Cities conference.
