Next City Welcomes Student Innovation Fellow

Next City is thrilled to welcome Audrey Novinger as our Student Innovation Fellow for the summer.

She has joined Next City, a nonprofit news organization covering solutions for equitable cities, for a 12-week fellowship in partnership supported by the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri. Based in Columbia, Missouri, Novinger will work on two innovative initiatives over the course of the summer — to gather impact stories from readers and establish best practices for improving engagement with LinkedIn newsletters. Her findings will be shared with the journalism industry through articles she writes for RJI’s Innovation in Focus series.

Novinger is an undergraduate student journalist at Mizzou who writes for The Maneater. She double majors in Women’s and Gender Studies and Journalism. A recent graduate of Cottey College, a small women’s college in Nevada, MO, she values researching and writing about topics related to intersectional feminism, environmental sustainability, and social justice.

Novinger’s professional experience includes working as a writing tutor at Cottey College and completing a writing internship with CatchPhrase Communications. Audrey has experience in copywriting, news writing, and designing a school-wide symposium focused on disability justice at the University of Missouri.

“I am excited to work with a nonprofit newsroom that aligns with my values and is doing important work. The Next City team has been so welcoming, and I am looking forward to helping collect impact stories from readers and finding ways to increase audience engagement through LinkedIn newsletters,” Novinger says. “In the short time I have been here, I have already learned a lot about nonprofit newsrooms, and I am excited to continue working with this team!”

Over the years, Next City has experimented with strategies to expand its audience, build community, and reach people where they are. The projects Novinger will be working on will help the publication continue to do that work with fresh eyes and new perspectives.

“Having an RJI Innovation Fellow as part of our newsroom during the summer will provide us with the opportunity to better understand our audience and how our journalism has impacted how they do their work,” says Deonna Anderson, editorial director at Next City. “Novinger’s work will also help us get more clear about where we spend our energy and resources to further our reach and spread the solutions that we report on more widely.”

Founded in 2003, Next City’s journalism centers marginalized voices while amplifying solutions to the problems that oppress people in cities. Next City’s readers are the city-builders who share our vision for the transformation of cities. Our core audience consists of individuals working in city planning, finance, architecture, media, academia, transportation, the arts — or within any sector that must collaborate to make cities run more equitably.
