Next City Introduces 2016 Urban Affairs Journalism Fellow

Next City announces the start of our summer 2016 urban affairs journalism fellow, Cassandra Maddox. Maddox was selected from a talented group of applicants and joins the edit team in our Philadelphia office. Originally from Atlanta, Maddox is a recent School of Journalism graduate from Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York.

As a student, she worked on a biweekly food and nutrition show as a reporter, video editor and camerawoman. She’s also been part of a team of journalism students who produced weekly newscasts with alternating roles as anchor, reporter and executive producer. Most recently, she used her multimedia skills to cover New York City nonprofit Picture the Homeless.

In 2013, she interned at the campus paper, The Statesman, reporting for the arts and entertainment section. In January 2014, she studied abroad in Istanbul, Turkey, in a program called Journalism Without Walls. Gaining experience as a foreign correspondent, she reported on local businesses and the LGBT community’s fight for equality.

In May 2015, she was awarded the Robert and Rhoda Amon Scholarship, which is presented to an outstanding journalism major with an excellent academic record, a strong commitment to a career in journalism, and demonstrable writing and reporting skills.

At Next City, she hopes to use her broadcast and reporting skills to cover city policy, community development, education and transportation, in both written and visual mediums.

Next City’s new urban affairs journalism fellowship is for young journalists of color interested in pursuing a career in reporting and writing about equitable development, criminal justice, policymaking, transportation, city planning and more. Although minorities represent more than half the population of the 10 largest U.S. cities, they are vastly underrepresented in the media. This fellowship aims to bring disproportionately underrepresented voices to the online conversation about cities.
