Drawing from their urban development work in the United States and abroad, Enrique Peñalosa, former Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia, and Majora Carter, of MCG Consulting will lead a panel discussion and answer audience question about the process behind building and sustaining equality in public open space. MacArthur ‘genius’ Fellow and Peabody Award winning radio broadcaster, Majora Carter founded and led the groundbreaking Environmental-Equality nonprofit, Sustainable South Bronx, from 2001-2008 – leading the way for City & State policy direction on Green-Infrastructure, Urban Forestry, and Land Use. She wrote a successful $1.25M Federal DOT planning grant for the South Bronx Greenway, which went on to garner NY City approval and $50M in first phase construction funds, is spearheaded the creation of national award winning parks in one of the poorest congressional districts of the US. Since then, she has consulted worldwide on how to enrich the lives of residents in economically under-performing communities. Her current work includes real estate development designed to help move Americans out of poverty, as well as tech education, entrepreneurship, and talent pipeline development.
Enrique Peñalosa is an urban strategist whose vision and proposals have significantly influenced policies in numerous cities throughout the world. He currently is President of the Board of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy of New York. He has lectured all over the world in governmental, academic and citizens’ forums. Peñalosa’s ideas have been featured in many of the world’s most important media and he has also published articles in numerous periodicals and books. As Mayor of Bogota, the 7 million inhabitants’ capital of Colombia, Peñalosa profoundly transformed the city, turning it into an international example for improvements in quality of life, mobility and equity.

James Corner, of James Corner Field Operations, and Eloise Hirsh, of the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, will discuss the planned development of Fresh Kills landfill into one of New York City’s largest public parks.
