Next City is seeking a dynamic, experienced journalist to join its team as Senior Editor. Next City is a fast-growing media organization dedicated to uncovering ways of improving urban life in the U.S. and abroad. As a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire social, economic and environmental change in cities by creating media and events around the world, we prize ambitious employees who invest themselves fully in their position and the work of the organization.

The ideal candidate for the Senior Editor position is someone who knows what makes a great story, how to build a narrative and argument through short blog posts and long-form journalism, and how to work with writers to bring out their best skills. This editor will help columnists and contributors shape stories, taking responsibility for the quality and character of much of the website’s Daily content. This position will balance a high level of responsibility with a strong command of grammar, style and attention to detail.

Next City is a publication for people who care about cities. While applicants need not have experience working for other urbanist media, they should have a documented interest and familiarity with Next City’s work and the latest issues and trends in economic development, infrastructure and planning.

Primary responsibilities of the Senior Editor include:

  • Working with Next City columnists and freelance contributors to generate story ideas, shape their columns, grow their network and increase their audience engagement
  • Copy editing columnists’ stories, which includes wordsmithing as well as the necessary drudgery of hyperlinks and photo captions
  • Final copy editing of weekly long-form Forefront stories
  • Preparing weekly app and e-newsletter content
  • Managing an assistant editor whose job covers social media, fact checking and outreach
  • Participating in planning, strategy, meetings and events that are integral to the general growth of Next City
  • Ability to travel and attend work events after hours and on weekends, as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

This is a full-time, exempt position based in Philadelphia with a competitive salary and health benefits.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter, resume and an example of your writing to: jobs@nextcity.org. This position is open until filled. No phone calls please.

Next City is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age or veteran status.
