The murder of 15-year-old Hadiyah Pendleton has started a discussion about what, beyond imposing stricter gun control laws, can be done to stem violence on the streets of Chicago. One idea, discussed here, is to heal the damaged relationship between the police and community members.
In 2009, a Chicago high school made national headlines for a large fight that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert. The violence served as a wakeup call, and the school adopted a restorative justice program. Since then, the dropout rate has shrunk, more students are on track to graduate, and safety has improved.
