Next City Is Hiring an Assistant Editor

Next City, a nonprofit online journalism organization with a mission to inspire change in cities, is seeking a versatile journalist with at least 2 years of online newsroom experience to join the team as an assistant editor.

This full-time position will support Next City’s journalism 75 to 80 percent of the time and the organization’s general communications 20 to 25 percent of the time.

On the editorial side, duties include: Writing, editing, fact-checking and proofreading editorial content and organizational materials. Additionally, you will acquire photos and other art, fulfill reprint requests, generate story ideas, and review op-ed submissions. On the promotional side, this position will work with our Director of Events to write and copy edit press releases, and with our Senior Audience Engagement Manager to monitor and manage Next City’s newsletters, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media accounts.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized and capable of shifting gears, juggling tasks and working with colleagues on a small staff to establish priorities. This job isn’t for you if you wouldn’t be comfortable writing a press release, reporting a news brief for our website and copyediting a grant report all in the same day. In this role, you’ll have a good deal of autonomy and get excellent exposure to all aspects of the nonprofit journalism world.

This position will balance ability to multi-task with a strong command of grammar, style and attention to detail. (Candidates who advance past the first stage of the interview process will be asked to take a proofreading test and a writing test.) Next City is a publication for people who care about cities. While applicants need not have experience working for other organizations focused on urban issues, they should have a documented interest and familiarity with news and trends related to urban development, infrastructure and politics.

Preferred skills and experience

  • Fact-checking, proofreading, and story-idea generation

  • Proficiency in AP style

  • Familiarity with CMS (especially Expression Engine)

  • Writing and editing press releases and other marketing collateral

  • Promoting journalism through social media channels

  • Grant writing/reporting experience a plus

  • Some travel will be required; must have a valid passport
