Next American City is pleased to announce a new journalism fellowship program funded by the William Penn Foundation that will support three Philadelphia writers to contribute to Next American City’s daily blog and Forefront series.
Later this summer, Next American City will launch a page dedicated to local content about Philadelphia by these writers. The content on this page will focus on issues of infrastructure, entrepreneurship, arts and culture, placemaking, transportation and other concerns related to the livability of Philadelphia; moreover, the articles will address local issues in a national, and even international, context in order to compare and contrast policy and practice between Philadelphia and other cities. To enhance and expand upon the written work, fellows will help develop related panel discussions at the Storefront for Urban Innovation and other venues across the city.
Next American City seeks experienced journalists to fill these three writing positions and will accept applications until July 31, 2012; please note that fellowships may be filled before that deadline if qualified candidates are found. Each fellowship lasts six months, is a part-time commitment and includes a $15,000 award. Fellows may work from Next American City’s offices or remotely. The fellowship start dates are staggered: August 1, October 1, January 1. Fellows’ outputs will include but are not limited to: weekly blog posts, two Forefront stories and helping develop events.

A complete application will include:
- a cover letter pasted in the body of the email describing the applicant’s current work and past experience;
- two sample story ideas (one long-form and one short blog post idea);
- three published writing samples, submitted in the form of URL links or PDFs;
All things being equal, applicants who are familiar with and subscribers to Next American City’s Forefront series will be given preference.
