Next City is seeking a talented journalist of color for a one-year, full-time reporting fellowship. The fellowship, which includes a $40,000 salary and health benefits, offers the opportunity to work closely with experienced writers and editors to create compelling, idea-driven journalism about cities, with a particular focus on economic development, economic policy and social mobility.

Next City is a fast-growing media organization dedicated to uncovering ways of improving urban life in the U.S. and abroad. As a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire social, economic and environmental change in cities by creating media and events around the world, we prize ambitious employees who invest themselves fully in their position and the work of the organization.

The fellow will research and write blog posts on a daily basis. The fellow will be considered an essential member of the Next City staff and will work out of the organization’s Philadelphia office. In addition to providing content for NextCity.org’s daily blog, the fellow will be expected to write longer reported features and generate other editorial content as needed.

The position is ideal for journalists of color who have a demonstrated interest in cities and are eager to build an online discussion about ways to improve social mobility and economic opportunity in urban communities. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer with ability to use human stories, data and reporting to craft compelling arguments and journalism.

Primary responsibilities of the fellow include:
• Report, research, and write articles and blog posts for Nextcity.org
• Play a role in web production, including layouts, multimedia packages, copyediting, and social media
• Other duties as assigned as a member of the Next City team.

This fellowship is limited to writers of color in effort to bring disproportionately underrepresented voices to the online conversation about cities. Although minorities represent more than half the population of the United States’ ten largest cities, they are vastly underrepresented in the media. They account for only 12.37 percent of newsrooms surveyed in the annual American Society of News Editors. They represent roughly a quarter of journalism graduate students. And their voices are particularly scarce in niche media markets such as Next City’s urbanist community.

The fellowship will begin July 7, 2014. A moving stipend may be available if relocation is necessary.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• Previous journalism experience (at least 1-2 years)
• Strong and demonstrated interest in cities, economic development and related public policy
• Outstanding research and writing skills; fact-checking experience preferred
• An efficient, flexible, and detail-oriented approach to tasks
• Familiarity with using digital and social media, including Twitter, Facebook and other platforms
To apply, please answer the following questions on a Word Document, and send to jobs@nextcity.org, along with a resume and three references. The subject line should be Next City Fellowship.

No phone calls please.

Deadline for applications has been extended until May 21, 2014
