Police

Next City acknowledges the historically racist underpinnings of how policing has been practiced in the United States, and how racial profiling and police violence unfairly target historically marginalized groups and lead to disprorportionate rates of incarceration for these populations. In addition to taking a look at what police abolition could look like in practice, many of the solutions we amplify in this area demonstrate how removing the police presence from public schooling, traffic enforcement, and mental health response lead to better and less violent outcomes for all involved persons. There are some evidence-based practices that seem to reduce police violence. Any “reduction” of violence, however, is not an elimination. And one death at the hands of police is too many.
