1:00pm - 2:00pm Eastern
Join Next City for a webinar with guest presenter and Next City board member, Diana Lind, who will discuss her new book “Brave New Home: Our Future in Smarter, Simpler, Happier Housing” on Wednesday, October 21 at 1 p.m. Eastern time. This webinar will be hosted by Next CIty board chair, Eric Shaw.
It’s a simple fact: More people are living alone. Today in America 35.7 million people live by themselves — this is 28 percent of all households. While this number is up 13 percent compared to the 1960s, the single-family homes that dominated the 20th century have not seen much of an update that reflects the way that a growing number of Americans are now living.
In her book, Lind explores how single-family houses are detrimental to society as well as the planet. She goes on to highlight more affordable and environmentally friendly solutions that also help to nullify the loneliness that sometimes comes along with living alone. Some of Lind’s examples include multi-generational living, in-law suites, co-living, micro apartments, tiny houses, and new rural communities.
“Brave New Home offers a diagnosis of the current crisis in American housing and a radical re-imagining of the possibilities of housing,” says Lind.
In addition to serving as editor in chief and executive director of Next City from 2008 to 2014, Lind has worked at Architectural Record magazine, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently the Executive Director of the Arts + Business Council for Greater Philadelphia and the Housing Fellow at the global nonprofit, NewCities. She lives in Philadelphia. Lind is currently serving as a board member of Next City.
