Big Idea Workshop Presented by National Recreation and Park Association

Big Idea Workshop Presented by National Recreation and Park Association

Friday, September 14, 2018

6:00pm - 8:30pm

The Big Idea Workshop is the culmination of the Vanguard conference, where our Vanguards team up to leverage their collective experience and bring lasting, tangible benefit to the conference’s host city.

In New Orleans, our Big Idea spotlights the Claiborne Corridor Cultural Innovation District (CID), a 25-block transformation of the area under the elevated I-10 expressway along Claiborne Avenue, from Canal Street to St. Bernard Avenue. The federal highway was built 50 years ago on top of the historically black neighborhoods, once dooming the Claiborne Avenue business corridor beneath. The CID represents today’s effort to increase green infrastructure and economic stability while reimagining the neighborhood “under the bridge” as a thriving space for culture, commerce and play. Plans are in process, but challenges remain. Vanguards will work with members of the community, and each other, to grapple with some of those challenges.

Six Vanguard teams will deliver short presentations on challenges and solutions to economic development, housing affordability, cultural preservation, transportation access, environmental sustainability and healthy neighborhoods in the CID.

The event ends with a reception by Roux Carre and announcement of the winning idea. Registration below is required to attend. This event is free.
