Next City is proud to announce the release of “How Vanguards Are Making Cities More Equitable,” a curated ebook that shows us examples of how urban leaders are ensuring equity for all.

Since 2009, Next City has been making space for urban changemakers to gather every year for Vanguard, an experiential convening for rising leaders working to improve cities across sectors, including urban planning, community development, entrepreneurship, government, transportation, sustainability, design, art and media. 

From Washington, D.C. to El Paso, Texas, we have brought together more than 500 changemakers who are already a part of the Vanguard community. And in 2023, the conference will take place in Richmond, Virginia. To join us there as part of our next cohort or rising urban leaders, apply by Monday, June 12, 2023.

Over the years, our journalists have followed Vanguards’ efforts to make cities more equitable. This ebook gathers just a fraction of our coverage of the important work they’re doing across the globe. Vanguards have repurposed closed public school buildings, increased participation in local government, supported housing cooperatives and community land trusts — and so much more.
