PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The non-profit media organization Next City is proud to announce the launch of Science of Cities (nextcity.org/scienceofcities), a new weekly column that will explore the scientific underpinnings of cities. The column, written by Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow, is funded by the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Around the world, cities are struggling to become more resilient, opportunity-rich and inclusive. Public officials, the private sector, non-profit organizations, and self-proclaimed urban advocates need more information about best practices that can improve cities. By introducing this thought-provoking column to Next City’s readership of highly influential policymakers and thoughtleaders, Next City is helping to elevate the discourse about science, research, urban policy and their growing connections.

“This column will allow Next City to explore a new, emerging field of urban science in our customary holistic fashion, from health to infrastructure, sustainability to economic development. It’s a supremely exciting development in our content and we can’t wait to see what conversation it sparks,” says Next City Editor in Chief, Diana Lind.

The column will be written by Rebecca Tuhus Dubrow, formerly a contributing writer for the Boston Globe’s Ideas section. Her writing has appeared in Slate, The Nation, The New York Times Book Review and Dissent, among others.

The column will proactively seek out research projects in progress and report on recently published studies that examine the data on cities. Next City will work with an advisory committee of well-known urban researchers, such as Eric Klinenberg, Xavier de Souza Briggs, Laura Kurgan, and Anthony Townsend, among others, to ensure that Next City is covering the most timely and important stories.

Over the past year, Next City has launched several new topic-focused columns including The Equity Factor, Watermark, The Shared City and The Works. Science of Cities will complement these columns by cutting across subject matter.

Readers can now access Science of Cities at nextcity.org/column/scienceofcites and follow @nextcityorg for updates on Twitter.
