About Issue 29:
In Issue No. 29, Next American City’s Willy Staley examines how federal urban policy has changed under Obama — and finds that Shaun Donovan’s Department of Housing and Urban Development is leading the transformation by fostering interagency cooperation and new strategies for urban development. Staff writer Rachel Somerstein considers urban policy from another angle in “Red State Urbanism,” which reveals how two cities in some of the most conservative parts of the nation — Salt Lake City and Oklahoma City — are embarking on bold urban revitalization projects. This issue also explores the coming challenges for the soon-to-be-public Zipcar, an in-depth look at how much stadiums cost taxpayers, and a roundtable interview with three experts about the power of the arts to make cities better.
