Boston is leading the country when it comes to saving energy and implementing environmentally and economically sound policy, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. The city was one of 51 in the U.S. ranked for “energy efficiency efforts across five policy areas: local government operations, community-wide initiatives, buildings, energy and water utilities, and transportation.”
The D.C.-based energy efficiency advocacy nonprofit counts helping to reduce America’s electricity usage and seeing the adoption of new national standards among its accomplishments. It released the second edition of its “City Energy Efficiency Scorecard” this week. In addition to the rankings, the report offers strategies cities can implement to cut down on energy waste.
Other cities at the head of the list include New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Seattle. The ACEEE gave “most improved” to D.C., and Denver captured a spot in the top 10 this year.
Some other findings from the report include:
- Portland tops in energy-efficient transportation.
- Austin is Texas’ most energy efficient city.
- Chicago is more energy efficient than all other Midwestern cities.
- Seattle is the leader in energy efficiency in the Pacific Northwest.
- San Francisco is top ranking overall on the West Coast.
