There Goes the Neighborhood

WNYC and The Nation

In this four-minute piece, Kai Wright, features editor of The Nation, introduces a podcast series unpacking the “hot potato” term gentrification. The eight-week series focuses on New York City and reports on how different communities are experiencing the mounting “tsunami” of real estate market pressures. “It’s not just about real estate,” Wright says. The story digs into the systemic race- and class-based inequities at play. You’ll hear from African American and Latino residents who have lived in these neighborhoods for decades, and from developers who are transforming these places based on the tastes of young professionals with money to spend. Gentrification may be a problem backed by powerful global capital interests, says Jim O’Grady, a reporter for WNYC, but “that doesn’t mean it can’t be changed … by community activism and political decision-making.”
