The Spirit of North Shore

Artbound

This nine-minute video provides an in-depth look at how the Los Angeles-based nonprofit design studio Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) is working in partnership with residents of the Eastern Coachella Valley to design and build an eight-acre public park. Chelina Odbert, co-founder and executive director of KDI, clearly outlines the role of residents in the design process, saying “the community can define their problems far better than we can.” As allies and providers of technical assistance, the designers have brought creative solutions to the park design, addressing the challenges identified and prioritized by North Shore residents. Watch this compelling mini-documentary to learn how a park can serve not only as a space to gather and play, but also as a “productive public space” incorporating elements like access to quality foods, a bike-share headquarters
