The Just City Essays

J. Max Bond Center, Next City and the Nature of Cities

What might a “just city” look like, and what are potential strategies for getting there? Editors of Next City posed this question to architects, mayors, artists, doctors, designers, scholars, philanthropists, ecologists, urban planners, and community activists from twenty-two cities around the world. The resulting twenty-six essays cover themes central to community engaged design: racial justice, democratic process, citizen empowerment, equitable development, environmental sustainability, and ways in which the planning and design fields can advance these goals. The editors caution that the series is not meant to provide answers, but is rather “a provocation—a call to action.”
