Pop-Up Resource Village

Designing Justice + Designing Spaces

In this three-minute video, you’ll hear how the architect Deanna Van Buren, co-founder of Designing Justice + Designing Spaces, and collaborators from Five Keys Charter School are working to ensure that formerly incarcerated students in San Francisco County can continue their studies as they leave prison and reintegrate into their communities. When seeking necessary services after their release, students face all kinds of barriers, from navigating gang turf to paying for transportation. To address these challenges, artists, designers, educators, and students are creating a mobile, multi-functional “village” of classrooms and service-delivery spaces out of five municipal buses. Tyrone Mullins, an alumnus of Five Keys and a Pop-Up Resource Village collaborator, says, “When you open up the door and say, ‘We want to hear what you think, we want to hear what you feel, … we want you to participate,’ then you get a different kind of community member.”
