A Soundwalk on Private ‘Sidewalks’ in Houston’s Third Ward

MIT Community Innovators Lab
Allegra Williams

This blog post highlights the work of the new program at the MIT Community Innovators Lab (CoLab) called Empathetic Aesthetics. Post author Allegra Williams clearly describes the non-traditional planning methodology in which participants “elected to learn about the city using not only traditional research methodologies of data analysis and GIS mapping, but through the more sensory lens of aesthetic inquiry.” The area described in this post is the Third Ward neighborhood in Houston, Texas, where CoLab professionals and associated MIT students are working with Project Row Houses, an art-based organization celebrating African American history and culture, to consider strategies for equitable and racially inclusive development.
